Cultural DistrictKimball Art MuseumA World-Renowned Building
The Kimbell Art Museum is widely regarded as one of the most outstanding architectural achievements of the modern era. Designed by the American architect Louis I. Kahn (1901–1974), the Museum has won wide acclaim for its classic modern building since its opening in 1972. Kahn's innovative use of natural light and subtle articulation of space and materials greatly enhance the experience of the art. Kahn envisioned a museum with "the luminosity of silver." In his design, "narrow slits to the sky" (as he described the skylights) admit natural light, which perforated metal reflectors disperse onto the underside of cycloid-shaped vaults and down the walls. Courtyards, lunettes, and light slots vary the quality and intensity of the light. The building's gracious proportions, fine craftsmanship, and beautiful landscaping add further to the sense of serenity and restraint
Modern Art MuseumThe Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is dedicated to collecting, presenting, and interpreting international developments in post–World War II art in all media and creating a welcoming environment for its public appreciation. The Modern promotes understanding and interest in art and artists through curatorial research and publications, and a variety of educational programs, including lectures, guided tours, classes, and workshops.
The Modern maintains one of the foremost collections of modern and contemporary art in the central United States and hosts major traveling exhibitions. The Permanent Collection consists of more than 3,000 works including pieces by Anselm Kiefer, Robert Motherwell, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Gerhard Richter, Susan Rothenberg, Richard Serra, Andres Serrano, Cindy Sherman, and Andy Warhol.
Amon Carter MuseumAmon G. Carter, a legendary figure in Texas history, was for most of his life Fort Worth's leading citizen and champion. Mr. Carter's will provided for the establishment of a museum in Fort Worth devoted to American art. "As a youth, I was denied the advantages which go with the possession of money," he stated in the will. "I am endeavoring to give to those who have not had such advantages, but who aspire to the higher and finer attributes of life, those opportunities which were denied to me."
Bass HallThe mission of the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall is to serve as a permanent home to major performing arts organizations of Fort Worth and as a premiere venue for other attractions so as to enhance the range, quality, and accessibility of cultural fare available to the public; to promulgate arts education; and to contribute to the cultural life of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, and the region.
